BLE sensors

I set up a home BLE proximity detection with multiple ESP home sensors. I got my phone working and would like to have those tags on my keys and wallet so I know where they are! Been using Bermuda integration.

I had an old chipolo tag but I can’t get it to work. I am hesitant to buy other tags on Amazon because it will say it only works with Apple etc. Looking into those it seems they change their MAC address? Any thoughts or direction I can be sent to get it working?

Thanks!

I use the Bermuda integration with Tile tags on keys and wallet. They get picked up by the proxies very reliably.

I’ve found devices that change their MAC addresses to be impossible to track - you can only track an Android phone if it has the HA app installed with the iBeacon enabled. The Bermuda docs have quite a good section on this.

Are you familiar with BLE sensors? Bermuda? I have set up a bluetooth proxy network with a device in each room so I know what room my phone is in for example. I would also like to tag my wallet and keys but most of the tags I see for sale I believe they are the ones that change MAC addresses so they are hard to track. Maybe someone here has successfully tracked these types.

Bermuda is an integration that uses the ESP home devices and reports back what room the tag is in.

If you are confused you’ll just have to read up on this instead of replying with absolutely no help and only being snarky (user d921). Because it looks like jack knew exactly what I was talking about (not “impossible” at all) and probably answered my question.

Thanks @jackjourneyman that was helpful I’ll buy some tile tags. I was hoping there was some integration that could detect the MAC address changing devices out there

Bermuda is an integration in Home assistant. I wanted to get the tags working in home assistant.

ah you edited your nonsense away. Smart

Why would you have this in your bio: “I love helping those who are just starting with the Home Assistant platform figure out how to best apply it for their needs.” if you act like this in the forums… smh

I tell everyone that is interested in Home assistant and the great community, your nonsense isn’t needed and scares new people away

Now, now gents…

To be fair, it is a fairly obscure corner of HA lore.

Apparently it’s a “security” thing. According to the Bermuda docs, you can do it for Apple phones. For Android it requires more hacking than I’m capable of. I imagine it must be impossible for non-programmable devices like tags.

I’m quite deaf and I was hoping to be able to track my hearing aids - quite cool for room-level presence detection. But no. Why would you need security in your hearing aids?

I ‘hear’ that. There are many great Tag options on amazon, and you’ve ran into the same problem. I was reading on the security aspect (changing MAC) that people can’t track you out in the world, which makes sense.

I use the HA app on my android phone and tablets. I have “last known location” on my dashboard so I’m not looking in the same 8 places to find my tablet.

Thanks again for your input!

There seems to be a Tile integration, though I’ve never used it. The documentation is almost non-existent, so I’ve no idea what it does.

If you’ve gotten your tile tags to work with bermuda I’m doing the same! I ordered them up we’ll see

Did you change your APP dashboard to change based on what room you are in?

Hadn’t thought of that.

I use Bermuda to identify the speakers HA should use when responding to voice commands. It also allows me to give voice commands like “Lights out” without specifying which lights I’m talking about.

I have two proxies in each room, but even so I’ve found that there is sometimes a bit of jitter between adjacent rooms or between rooms on different floors. To get around that I use the Bayesian integration to calculate the probability of my being in each room, then a template to select the most likely. This is surprisingly accurate because you can include other data in the calculation - from motion sensors, for example; time of day (at 4am I’m probably in bed); what devices are in use (TV, Xbox etc). Not foolproof, of course.

If anyone stumbles upon this post and is confused (looks like his unnecessary attack posts were hidden) here is the video that got me started

I’ll check out that Bayesian. The problem I have would be kids in the other room that my phone is pinging but could be helpful.

heres that dashboard video mentioned earlier:

Don’t rub it in. Doesn’t help.
