I tried to add the Shelly Plug Plus US (seen from a youtube video) and everything seems to be set up right in HA (active bluetooth scanner mode, newest software, etc) but isn’t discovering any devices. I have an Intel NUC running HA and to test it, I turned off the native bluetooth to that and my bluetooth devices aren’t discovered with the Shelly. When I turn the NUC bluetooth back on, the bluetooth devices are now discoverable again in HA (clearly using the bluetooth from the NUC). I am just trying to use a simple device to extend my bluetooth near my Yale smart locks for more reliability as it sometimes goes offline with the bluetooth and i thought this Shelly Plug Plus US would be plug and play.
I have tried to look on the forum for a solution but can’t find anything. Just that it should be working how I set it up.
This requires an active BT connection (back and forth communication versus just listening for broadcasts from BT devices) which unfortunately the Shellys don’t do. I’d love it if they ever add this, as I have a couple scenarios where it would be quite convenient.
Using a BT Proxy with ESPHome is your best bet for extending BT range.
So maybe i’m confused here - when i configure the Shellys, they give me the option for active or passive bluetooth in HA. i thought if i made it active it would do what i want?
That’s active or passive scanning (passive being just listen for what devices broadcast on their own versus actively send out a request for devices in the area to broadcast data). But it’s still all one-way, HA isn’t communicating back. Whereas your lock needs an active connection (true back and forth communication). I agree that the terminology is very confusing.
Ah thank you this makes more sense! So would the get generic esp32 device, flash with bluetooth proxy, then set up with ESPHome work for what i’m looking for?
