Yeah, I’d chalk it up to bellows and the zha component still being pretty, well, raw. I have two Cree bulbs that simply refuse to work consistently, and yet when I put one on Iris as a test it’s been flawless. I just decided to continue expanding my Z-Wave collection for now.
I figured I would update this old post to say that since the recent updates to the zha component that these motion sensors are now reliably working in HA.
I’ve had one running for about a month now and it’s been rock solid.
Hi Finity,
I just bought 4 of these sensors for integration with Hassio. Would you be able to provide me with your config or a good place to start?
Thanks a lot Finity,
David
With the latest versions of HA and the ZHA component configured all I needed to do was pair the sensor just like you do for any other zigbee device. there is no other device specific configuration needed.
After that it just worked. And has been working for over a month now.
Do I need a ZHA hub? Right now I have home assistant running with a couple of shellies and bought the motion sensors when I saw them on sale for 10 bucks so i’m hoping I don’t need a ZHA hub.
Thanks for the quick response
Yes, you need a USB Zigbee radio dongle like the nortek husbzb-1, plugged into the device that’s hosting Home Assistant. Or you get a hub like SmartThings, Wink, or Hubitat and connect Home Assistant using integrations or Hass.io add-ons. Either way, you need a device that has a Zigbee radio to communicate to the sensors.
The USB dongle and Home Assistant will always be more work than a dedicated hub like SmartThings, but it’s not too bad to set up. If you want to pair Z-Wave locks with Home Assistant, then it gets a little more complicated because you have to setup a network key.
For Zigbee devices, it is pretty easy to pair and unpair Zigbee light bulbs and sensors in Home Assistant with a USB dongle. It is a huge pain to manage Z-Wave devices because there aren’t any notifications on successful and unsuccessful pairing. You just refresh the browser and hope your sensor shows up. I quit using the USB dongle after wasting a weekend trying to pair three different Z-Wave Plus sensors to Home Assistant and went back to using SmartThings and Home Assistant together.
You can find a SmartThings 3rd gen hub on eBay for $45, which is the same price as a USB dongle. Home Assistant integration is incredibly easy using Home Assistant Cloud, but that costs $5/month (but you’re supporting the developers!). You could also setup SmartThings and HA using MQTT, but it’ll be a little more painful.
You could also try Hubitat Elevation and HA together. There is a Hass.io add-on that connects the two, though I don’t know how user-friendly it is.
So do you just plug it into the USB of the raspberry pi or how does that work? I’m thinking about buying it since it opens the door to a million more devices but I just want to make sure that I can get it working
