Can HomeAssistant Green be an openvpn client?

I bought a HomeAssistant Green device for my in-laws’ home to control heat pump along the solar gains.

I don’t need real cloud access but it would be nice if I could control HA from my home. I have a working OpenVPN server here and I wonder if HA Green can work as OpenVPN client and just connect to my server without additional routing or something.
Everything I found is installing the client outside of HA but I think I don’t have that access level on the HA green, right?

This is the HomeAssistant device being openVPN server and needs port forwarding on the router. And this one requires root access. Do I have root access on HomeAssistant Green?

Does the in-laws router have the ability to host an OpenVPN server? If so, that would be the easiest way as you could just connect using your mobile and fire up the HA app. You’d just need to add the IP address of their HA server to the app.
