Can I use DNS to redirect my nabu casa URL to my local installation

So the HA mobile app allows configuration of a local server address (e.g ha.example.com) and the external (nabu-casa provided) address which looks something like https://ihdeaadhbhh…hhfssstt.ui.nabu.casa.

The issue is that between using VPNs to my home network and with other devices etc, I often have to make a conscious decision of which address to use.

I use pihole locally and for my VPN. If I set https://ihdeaadhbhh…hhfssstt.ui.nabu.casa as a CNAME for ha.example.com can I expect to bump into any issues and can I expect any performance issues?

DNS exists for a reason. IP address to tramslation.

Providing your DNS (servers) are up and running (being used is important) then you can point antthng to an IP /TLD witihihn your local domin.

Sounds like a need for a proxy manager above DNS to me.

Can you further elaborate? I use a local nginx reverse proxy to serve ha.example.com (hosted on a different machine)

I think I misread the original post.

So, let’s talk this out.

I believe the local server address in the HA mobile app is for use when identified on your WiFi SSIDs.

When away from home, you are not on your WiFi (VPN or not). So, the HA app would use Nabu. Right?

This is how mine is working. What other situations do you have where you make a conscience decision of which address to use for the HA app?

I am using AdGuard Home. But basically the same as pihole.
