Can MQTT be used to control an unsupported switch?

I’ve got a Zentec Living outlet that uses Tuya for control and from what I can see, Tuya is not supported by HA. I’m new to IoT and Home Assistant so I figured I ask a simple question before spend hours researching MQTT…

Can MQTT be used to control this type of device?
Does the device need to be compatible with MQTT?

The device has to specifically implement the MQTT protocol to be compatible.
If it doesn’t say MQTT on it or in the documentation, you won’t be able to use MQTT to control it.
