Can someone help me get my first device working on Hass.io installed on Pi3

Hey Everyone…
OK, I’m a total newbie to Home Assistant, but have been using Smart Devices for many years .
That said I’m a bit overwhelmed with configuring Home Assistant.

So my question is can someone help me get my first device working on Hass.io?
I’ll go on my own after that hurdle

I’ve successfully installed Hass.io on my Pi3 and have full browser and SAMBA access, but I do not see any devices other than my one Roku 2 device in my living room. And it may be that’s the only one found because it’s on my LAN not WiFi.
All my other devices are all on Wifi…
Here’s the list: And none of the device excect the Roku 2 shows up in my Hass.io installation.
And I’m thinging because it’s the only device directly connected to my LAN (Not Wifi as all the other devices)??

1 ea. Roku 2 (Ethernet connection and found by Hass.io)
2 ea. Amazon Alexa’s (WiFi)
6 ea. Sonoff Basic WiFi Switches (Not hacked yet with Tasmoto)
1 ea. Amazon Fire TV (WiFi)
3 ea. GE Link Bulb’s interfaced through Smatthings HUB
1 ea. Smartthings Hub
4 ea. WiFi Enabled LED RGB Light Strips (Interfaced through Alexa)
1 ea. Broadlink IR / RF Hub
4 ea. Etekcity Wireless RF Remote Electrical Outlet Switch’s (Interfaced through Broadlink and Alexa)
1 ea. Grace WiFi Radio
5 ea. X10 Legacy Light switches not yet interfaced

OK just pick one out and please guide me through this, and I’ll be so grateful…
Also I may need to setup my Hass.io for WiFi?? First ??

Thanks

This is a sign you may have an issue with your WiFi, and nothing to do with Home Assistant.

Depending on what router you have, and what features are enabled, you may be segregating wifi and wired.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t be available in Home Assistant.

Did you add the necessary config options to your configuration.yaml? Almost nothing is automatically configured for Home Assistant by the ‘discovery’ tool. A lot of what you have listed are needed to be added to the configuration as components.

See here for devices that are auto discovered if you have discovery enable in your config.

Nothing wrong with may home WiFi as its been working perfectly with 20 or more device’s for years now.
I understand the pi3 has built in WiFi, but I believe it has to be manually setup?

So let me start off again with my original question.
Can you help me get may first device setup? And preferably the easiest one.
I’ll learn from that first one and will be more informed for the rest and future devices.

Well it did find may Roku 2 device upon installation. I don’t have any of the other devices on that list. I posted may entire list of device’s on my original post.

How do I enable WiFi on my Hassio image on my Pi3?

Did you look at the components section for broadlink?

Have you looked at the components page for your devices?

I’m sorry, but you need to look at their respective pages, and edit your configuration yaml to suit. It isn’t difficult to do.

To be more clear. My first objective may be to get the WiFi working on my Pi3 with the Hassio image.
I have access the the shared folder’s via samba. Can I edit the configuration file’s there?

Amazon Alexa’s - Options1, Option2 (WiFi)

Sonoff - Many options, Tasmota option

Amazon Fire TV

Those were just by doing a quick search on the forum and component section.

Start with the components section, if you get stuck, feel free to ask for help, you would be surprise how helpfull everyone is on this forum

I was in the same boat as you when I just started.

Don’t be intimidated, give it a shop and come back for help if need.

If you have a wired Ethernet connection, it’s not necessary to use WiFi, wired connections are more stable.

OK going to attempt installing my Amazon Echo. A little overwhelming, but gotta start somewhere I guess.
Still I think the WiFi must be enabled on the Pi3 first. Agree?

Only the following devices are auto discovered so far.

Apple TV
Axis Communications security devices
Belkin WeMo switches
Bluesound speakers
Bose Soundtouch speakers
Denon network receivers
DirecTV receivers
Frontier Silicon internet radios
Google Cast
IKEA Trådfri (Tradfri)
Linn / Openhome
Logitech Harmony Hub
Logitech media server (Squeezebox)
Netgear routers
Panasonic Viera
Philips Hue
Plex media server
Roku media player
SABnzbd downloader
Samsung TVs
Sonos speakers
Telldus Live
Wink
Yamaha media player
Yeelight Sunflower bulb

IMO, I disagree.

Start with the broadlink, you currently don’t have anything to expose to Echo.

Echo controls devices through HASS, unless you create custom commands, which you may not be ready for.

Or try

with your WiFi Led lights,

This may help you integrate your RF Outlets

No. You don’t need WiFi if you have Ethernet

You don’t need to do this and I wouldn’t advise it!

This would be the last thing to install when all other devices are working.

Excellent idea Coolie :grinning:
I agree the Broadlink Will be a Good start and I already have 4 of the RF outlets being controlled by the Broadlink.
Also the Flux LED Magic Light would be a good choice for my next device to setup in Hass.io Thanks so much for the advice.
