Can’t connect to Modem but can when plug into router

I Can’t connect to Modem but can when plug into router.

I have a netgear cm1200 -100nar modem and the most recently released google nest Wi-Fi routers (3 pack).

When I connected my dell optiplex running HASS to the Ethernet output on my google router, it works and connects fine.

However, when I directly plug into my netgear modem, it doesn’t connect to the network.

Any suggestions on what I can do to solve this?

You seem to have 2 networks, one on your netgear, one on your google router. Reconfigure your google router so it uses your netgear network.

If the Netgear is truly only a modem, then OP needs the Google router. The modem doesn’t create a network; it’s just the gateway to OP’s ISP. Therefore, the only device that should be plugged into the modem is a router.

For example, my setup for Xfinity is an Arris Surfboard modem to an EdgetouterX router to a Unifi 16 port switch then to all of my devices including 2 Unifi APs. I can’t connect a laptop or anything else into the 2nd port of the Surfboard modem.

True. Then he can’t use the port on the Netgear.

Is there a solution to this?

My response was the solution. You cannot connect directly to a modem and get internet access or create a network. You must have the router also. For many ISPs, they say they provide the modem but it’s actually a modem and router. In your case, your Netgear is only a modem so you have to have the Google router in order to have access to the internet or create a network.

Got it. So, this device would never be able to push out internet access via Ethernet port except routers?

Sucks cause I can’t assign adguard directly to everything on my network
