Can the Aqara Water Leak Sensor Be Paired to HA without a hub?

Can the Aqara Water Leak Sensor Be Paired to HA without a hub?

I am pressing and holding the indicator light/reset button for three seconds and trying to add via Zigbee, but having no luck.

No, you will need a zigbee gateway/coordinator, for example an Aqara hub, a Conbee stick or a Zigbee2MQTT device.

Im my opinion, a Conbee stick or the Zigbee2MQTT are superior to the Aqara hub since you will be able to add almost any zigbee device, from any manufacturer (IKEA, Aqara etc).

I have a Conbee. the temp/humidity pair fine.

Ok, then it should work. Sometimes you need to have the device very close to the Conbee and try a number of times before they pair. Also, reset the device each time before pairing, but you likely already know that.

Go it. Thanks!

That’s actually bad advice, zigbee devices should be placed in their final location when pairing them. Otherwise you can get routing issues once the device is in the final place. Especially Xiaomi devices are picky about their routes.

That might be the case, but most instruction state that the device should be in close proximity to the controller while paring.

I think that only makes sense for ZLL, for “regular” Zigbee it’s better to pair at or near the final location (and I concur with @Burningstone that it’s more or less mandatory for Xiaomi devices).

Did you solve this? I have the same problem!

Has this been solved yet? As I have the same question.

In my case, the battery that came with the sensor was the problem. The light came on when I did a long press but it wasn’t able to pair to home assistant. I replaced the battery and all went well… I did try at least 20 times with the old battery, so it’s not something random, it really was the battery and the blue light was “working”

As far as I’m aware the hub is required for the water leak sensor because it’s a WiFi only device, not zigbee.

EDIT: I may have spoken too soon. I’d just received a new water leak sensor which wouldn’t pair via ZHA after numerous attempts. However after about 20 further attempts, and moving to a different room with the sensor, I got it to pair finally.

So it’s just a case of retrying and retrying, just like the Aqara door/window sensors which are also a pain to pair.
