I’m having no success trying to get HASSIO to communicate with a USB modem for Caller ID. Anyone had any success?
Considering you are required to issue this command:
sudo usermod -a -G dialout homeassistant
I’m not sure this is possible with Home Assistant OS (previously called Hassio). You would probably have to be running Home Assistant Supervised. Not 100% sure about this though.
That’s the problem, Tom. I don’t think it’s possible at the moment, I was hoping someone might have figured it out!
I have a “StarTech 56K USB Dial-up & Fax Modem - V.92” and I’m able to receive caller ids by making use of an edited Modem Caller ID integration. The standard integration didn’t work for me out of the box. I’m in The Netherlands, so that could be the cause / the solution.
I made a PR for HA long time ago but since I couldn’t find other people to test, I didn’t request the merge. But you can still find the PR and maybe use the proposed changes in your own edited version of the Modem Caller ID integration. Have a close look of the problem description first, to check if you’re impacted by the same bug.
Version: 2020.12.2
Installation Type: Home Assistant OS
That’s fantastic, thanks for the reply. I’ll give it a shot, thanks!
OK, I’ve just realised that this might be difficult as I use HASSIO on a Pi.
Is there any way I can do this? Thanks.
Hello. Did you ever figure this out? I’m trying to use a modem to detect our land line ringing and am running into issues.
No, didn’t mange to do it although I think there has been an update to HASS OS so I’ll check it out soon.
I figured out my problem. The modem I purchased was a soft modem and was not compatible. I got another modem that was recognized by hassos and I can confirm you are able to get callerid info now. I’m on core 2021.10.4
Glad to here it worked for you! I might give it a go again when I’m in a tinkering mood again.
Can you share the modem info you purchase and got it working?
Thanks,
got it off ebay. it was a “TRENDnet TFM-561U USB Modem”
Thanks, I got one. I plugged a y splitter between my phone and the usb modem. But when someone calls it only grabs cid_time. CID_number and name does not show anything. Need help
Did you get this working? I have the same modem (TRENDnet TFM-561U) and am only seeing the state ring
and no attributes for cid_number
. Are you in the UK and if so what phone provider are you with? I am starting to wonder if the UK caller ID system (or Virgin Media’s) is incompatible.
I am in Canada, still having the same issue.
This seems to work fine for me… You guys still having issues?
Yes, it seems cid_number
is simply not available with either my hardware or the caller ID system for Virgin Media in the UK.
Just for reference this is the one I used in Canada and it’s working perfectly:
