Candeo RD1-Pro: how would I control one smart bulb and one non-smart bulb in the same room?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering buying the Candeo RD1-Pro, however, I have a slightly unusual setup and I’m not sure whether the RD1-Pro can do what I need.

I have two lights in the same room:

  • Light 1: a smart bulb
  • Light 2: a traditional dimmable bulb

What I would like to achieve is:

The Candeo control should control the smart bulb, while the traditional bulb should still be independently controllable and dimmable.

Has anyone tried something similar with the RD1-Pro?

What would be the best way to set this up?

It’s not relevant if your two bulbs are in the same room or not. How are your circuits, can you draw some wiring scheme?

Sorry, I think I explained my setup incorrectly.

What I actually mean is that I only have one smart bulb. If I use the Candeo RD1-Pro, it seems that the dimmer also needs to have a non-smart bulb connected to it.

So my question is: if I only have one smart bulb, and the other bulb is non-smart but cannot be controlled by the Candeo dimmer, what should I do with the non-smart bulb?

Non smart bulb can be still controlled by HA, because it 's wired to Candeo.

But if I want to keep the non-smart bulb manually controllable as well, is there a way to do that physically?

I don’t think that could “physically” be possible since knob is serving automations.
But maybe you can make some automation that button press is swapping dimmer target between smart bulb and Candeo bulb.

Can I please confirm the exact result you are looking to achieve?

From my understanding you would like to have control of the wired light independent from Home Assistant, as well as via Home Assistant, and then be able to use the dimmer to control the smart bulb as well. Is that correct?
Or did you originally want to control just the smart bulb but had understood the RD1-Pro needed a regular dumb bulb wired to it?

Is the smart bulb a simple dimmable white/yellow smart bulb or would you be looking to control colour as well?

The second option is actually what I originally meant. I only wanted to control the smart bulb with the RD1-Pro, but I had understood that the RD1-Pro needed to have a regular non-smart/dimmable bulb connected to it. That’s why I was wondering what I would do with the other bulb.

The smart bulb I have in mind is actually colour-capable, so I would like to be able to control its colour as well as brightness.

I’m also interested in the other setup you mentioned, where the wired light can be controlled independently of Home Assistant as well as through Home Assistant, while the RD1-Pro can also be used to control the smart bulb.

Hi Sally,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Controlling the smart bulb on its own is the simplest approach.

When set to remote mode, the RD1-Pro doesn’t need to be wired to a traditional bulb, so you can connect it directly to the same circuit as the smart bulb.
Please note that if it is just a single smart bulb, you will most likely need our LED bypass as well to help keep the circuit stable.
For the automation setup, I recommend using our smart bulb control blueprint.

The second scenario is certainly possible, though it will require setting up your own custom automations since we don’t have a dedicated blueprint for it.

We recently released a firmware update that allows the dimmer to stay in dimmer mode while still supporting double press, hold, and release action events.
This means you could build automations where a double press cycles through different smart bulb settings (such as colour, brightness, or toggling) and holding the knob adjusts the active setting, letting you cycle through colours or adjust brightness levels etc.

I would recommend taking a look at our Getting Started article for a good overview, and then our FAQs Master Index if there’s anything in particular you want to know.
