I would like to send adb commands to my android tablet via wifi using home assistant. How can I do this?
I tried the Android Debug Bridge integration:
However, I cannot connect to my tablet using this integration. It always says “Connection failed”. Maybe, this is only for android tv devices?

Yes, of course. Adb is enabled for usb and wifi. From my windows pc, I can send usb commands via usb.
Will I have to pair the tablet and home assistant first somehow, maybe?
Sorry. You have to ask the obvious questions first. 
I’ve only done this with a TV, but the TV had no connection with HA other than being on the same network.
I’m experiencing the same issue. ADB works well with my nvidia shield and hisense tv, which are both Android TV.
For some reason it will not connect to my tablet nor Samsung phone. I keep getting the “Failed to connect” message.
