Cannot connect to homeassistant.local:8123 using VirtualBox on Windows 10

I’m just starting out with Home Assistant. I’m using an old laptop with Windows 10 (with plenty enough grunt). I did a factory reset on it and then performed all the updates, then installed VirtualBox 6.1, and then followed the steps on the Windows - Home Assistant installation guide until it asked me to go to homeassistant.local:8123, at which point I got a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error.

I have tried:

  • Multiple browsers: Chrome, Edge, and Internet Explorer
  • Both homeassistant.local:8123 and homeassistant:8123/
  • Putting both http:// and https:// at the start
  • The IPv4 Address according to ipconfig in command prompt (192.168.5.80) with :8123 on the end. In this instance I get an ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED error instead.
  • Installing Fing on my phone and trying the only IP address I couldn’t readily identify
  • Switching off Windows Security Real-time protection and trying all of the above again
  • Reading a bunch of posts on this forum and videos on YouTube

network info returned the following…

The only other thing that may be of interest is that all of my devices (including the laptop running HA) are connected to my router via a Tenda Mesh3 home mesh wifi system.

Please help!

Just now I have tried connecting my laptop directly to my router via ethernet adapter. I switched off wifi and made sure the connection was working. Then I updated the network settings in the VM and rebooted it. I still cannot connect

Hi @toddh,

The post by @Pcgeeks seems to made by a bot. I don’t think it will help you out.

I don’t have an installation running on Virtualbox, but have you followed step 5 on the Virtualbox installation instructions?

  1. Then go to “Network” “Adapter 1” choose “Bridged Adapter” and choose your Network adapter

Also, you can look up the connected devices on your router if you visit the admin page of your router. For the Tenda system the address is: http://192.168.0.1, login admin password: admin (if Google is right).

Do you see homeassistant in the list of devices?
What is the brand and type of router you are using? You can look up the admin address for your router and login to your router to see if the Homeassistant server pops up in the list, if you haven’t already done this.

Hi @tom_l the post by @pcgeeks seems to be spam. It’s the only post made by this user and seems to be posted generic on forums for DNS_PROBE errors.

You can report posts using the flag icon at the bottom of each post.

fixed it by adding the network as a trusted network in my antivirus (AVAST)

Good Morning,
I am having the exact same issue. I am running home assistant through virtual box on a windows laptop.
Every once in a while I can randomly connect using nabu casa and for a short period of time I was able to connect using the local ip. In most cases though, when I try to connect I am greeted with “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN” or something of that sort. I am not doing anything different or making any changes during the occasions when it works. I really am at a complete loss and am not sure what to do next.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Did you find a reaolution for this? Sounds exactly like my issue. Thanks.
