Cannot get a Z wave device to include for the life of me!

I am new to HA, I have been using Smart things for years, I tried the Zooz S2 stick as well as the Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5+ but I cannot get any Z-wave devices to pair. When I remove them from SmartThings and exclude them from the Z-wave utilities. I even unplug the smart things hub. Did the factory reset on the GE switch (3x up, 3x down) until I get the blue flashing, even cycled power at the breakers, but I cannot get this switch to pick up my either the Zooz or the Aeotec through the Z-Wave JS or through the integration screens. I even moved my raspberry Pi4 4 right next to the switch to see if that helps. If I do the manual pair on the Aeotec it pairs instantly, but when I plug the stick back in, it picks up the switch, but it has a red unhappy face sayings its dead and the interview never gets past “Protocolinfo” if I go through the logs I see this, so it see it

Also, I can re include this switch to Smart things with out any issues? I have been stuck on this for a few days now! I really want to get rid of my smart things hub, but I have ~30 Z wave devices in my house! I have also tried a set of blinds and a Jasco version of the switch with no luck. Any ideas of next steps?

How is your USB Zwave stick connected to the Pi’s USB? Directly, or using an extended USB cable?

Radio controllers connected directly in to the Pi’s USB are known for having problems with interference…

I have it directly plugged in, let me see if I have a USB extender cable around

I couldn’t find an extension cable but found a USB hub, and it works! Did not have to do anything to it! Thank you!!

I should of posted this days ago!

Figure I would also leave another update for others who are facing this, after pairing several other devices with the Aeotec Gen5+ stick, the will pair with the USB extension, but they will not finish the interview process. If I plug into a powered USB hub, it zips through the process.

Hey there hackncrash, also worth noting to not directly pair a device with the stick, that is not compatible with HA as far as I’m aware. At least it wasn’t when HA had it’s own implementation with Zwave. Now with ZWave JS that might be different. Best to pair from within HA or ZWave JS web interface.

The most confusing piece of text of the month…

My bad, to clarify, the Aeotec Zstick has an onboard battery and allows you to take the stick next to where the device is installed and include the device with the stick by pressing a button on the stick itself. It saves the device and then when you plug it in, it exchanges it with your controller software. At least that’s the theory, not sure if it works, I know for sure with the old built in Zwave integration it was not compatible.

Ok, now I understand… Interesting feature. I can’t test it, as I use different stick. Actually would be nice, if someone does test that

It’s largely obsolete now that devices can pair by hopping through another device and not directly with the controller with Zwave Plus.
