Can't access HA when wifi is up but internet connection is down

Better get a keyboard and a monitor cable to hook it up.
It is the primary way to troubleshoot the HA with bigger issues, like crashes and disconnects, which prevent network access.

You are not making it easy…

Why do you hide the LOCAL HA IP address: that doesn’t make sense.
Your devices seem to be connected in different networks 192.168.4.0 & 192.168.7.0

I am not trying to be difficult.

I do have laptop.

What woiod cause them to be connected in different networks? How would i reaolve that? Sorry im not great at networking and fairly novice at this.

I do appreciate the help.

At least answer the questions when asked.

  1. Can you connect that laptop with a cable to your network?
  2. Do you have multiple separate network devices (router, access point, modem) on you network?
  3. What is the LOCAL (nobody can do anything with your local addresses) IP address

My laptops dont have ethernet ports.
Yes - modem, a routet (eero) and a mesh access point (eero)
192.168.5.246

Can you post the subnet mask (255.255.x.x) from your devices?

My internet connection was just restored. I was able to access my HA instance and went to Settings > Network > and changed my IP to static (thought it was static already)

The Netmask is 255.255.252.0

I’d love to figure out what I’ve been doing wrong & correct it so that this doesn’t happen again.

Obfuscating a local IP address is like a toddler covering his eyes thinking you can’t see him. The majority of Home Assistant servers have an IP of 192.168.x.x

@disparatic - You are going about troubleshooting the hard way. First and foremost, you need the IP of the server. Second, you really should be using a PC running a browser- NOT A PHONE. A terminal on the host computer is helpful, but not essential. Knowing the IP of the server and router is.

I notice that you did not answer any of my questions. If your functioning server is dependent on having the Internet, then you have some basic problems that will be back. You should always be able to access your Home Assistant server with any browser on your local network.

Wait? What? Your browser and AP are on different networks???

Don’t use your phone to troubleshoot network issues. Especially when you have a laptop.

Apparently not…

So you forgot to specify that your internet IS stil not working while we were trying to help you where as you used the past tense before!
You are really not an easy person to help!!!

It was NOT working until 45 min ago, but is now. Sorry if that was not clear. I could have chosen my wording better in hindsight.

I clearly have missed some of the basics of setting up HA and admittedly don’t know what I’m doing with that part of the networking. I have been trying to learn as I go but am deficient in that part. That is why I’m asking the community to help me learn and fix this problem so that it does not return the next time my ISP goes down and get everything (that is possible) to work locally.

THEN ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS!

There’s a lot of people here in the forums who will assist you, but not if you won’t answer questions, or simply ignore them.

You definitely have a network configuration error somewhere. It will come back. Better to fix it now and not in a panic when the ISP goes down.

I understand that there are network configuration errors/issues. How would I learn to fix them? If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Forgive my ignorence but does HA require local network to be set up and if so is there an article or video to show how?

Everything is up and running now but a big snow is coming soon and i know the internet will go down again.

Justin, this is most likely due to how your network is configured, specifically your modem/router and it’s network settings.
HA can function perfectly without an internet connection.

Since this is not related to HA, and your setup is different from ours, it’s difficult to help you with this.

Is there some sort of documentation on how it should be configured?

If your router was received with your internet subscription, then I would suggest you contact your ISP and tell them that your WiFi goes down when the internet goes down.
It should not do that and the error is in the router.
