Hello -
I have a ZST39 attached to a raspberry pi running z-wave-js. I’ve added many other devices in the past (70+) which all work and respond to commands. Recently I tried to add some Zen72s via smartstart, but they won’t add. I see them in the provisioning queue, but they never provision. I also tried to get the unit into manual inclusion mode, which works but then it never adds the devices. Further, I don’t see any smartstart messages in the debug log. Things I’ve tried:
- Update the firmware on the zst39
- Make sure there are S2 LR keys
- Factory reset the switches
- Update z-wave-js to the latest version
- Change the radio region to US, then back to US Long Range
I’m at a loss - I tried reaching out to zooz support and they were no help, just pointed me to the forums. I thought this might be faulty hardware, but it would be odd given all other functions to existing switches/devices works fine (but note, none are using LR).
Help?
Sometimes devices come from the factory included into a network. You have to perform an exclusion or factory reset first before you can pair the device to the new network.
Hey there -
Yes, that is one of the steps I did " * Factory reset the switches" which didn’t help. Also, I haved 6 of them, all exhibiting the same behavior, which leads me to belive it’s something with the zst39…
Are you using Z-Wave JS UI or Home Assistant to include the devices?
Are the ZEN72 devices the Long Range versions? If yes, and you are using Z-Wave JS UI, did you activate the SmartStart provisioning entry after scanning the QR code? The entries are disabled by default for LR devices and will only include once activated.
I’ve tried both - how do you “activate” it? Yes, they are LR versions. Perhaps I missed how to do this?
For Z-Wave JS UI you just toggle the Active button. Change the protocol to LR first if that’s what you want.
I haven’t tried using HA for SmartStart inclusion since it was newly updated in 2025.5, so that flow is different, you choose LR or Mesh at the beginning.
Looks like they are all active, but coming up as z-wave, not long range. Any ideas why?
Not all devices support Z-Wave Long Range. The easiest way to tell if a device supports Z-Wave Long Range is by looking at the logo. If the device supported Z-Wave Long Range you would have thr option to select Z-Wave Long Range.
But when I go and try to change this, LR is the protocol selected (and can’t be changed as it’s greyed out). Also, these switches won’t add in the normal way of tapping 3 times either.
That doesn’t matter because it greyed out. Have you tried unplugging your controller or restarting home assistant/z-wave js ui ? Does your network work outside of the inclusion problem?
Tried both of them, no luck. Zwave commands to already-included switches and devices works perfectly. Just can’t add any new devices as it wont include via smartstart or legacy inclusion.
