Cant install hass.io

So I received my RP3 model B for my birthday today and tried it with the OS and it worked fine. I then decided to play with hass.io.

I started the tutorial.
I have all the needed items, I formatted a 32GB sandisk class 10 SD card, used etcher to flash the hass.io install on to the card and then put it in my RP. I turn the power on, the hass screen comes on as stated and I expect to sit there for 20mins while it should update, however it doesn’t. The green led on the RP flashes sometimes, the LAN lights are orange and green and flash a little bit. but not like they would if they were downloading files. After some time (sometimes a few minutes, some time 20+ minutes, the screen goes blank/black and thats it until I unplug it. If I plug it back in again, it does the same thing and never goes past step 7 on the walk through

The link that it says becomes available in step 8 never works and just says it can not connect.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I am new to RP, but reasonably comfortable with linux, so not a complete noob!

Hassio runs headless. You will not see anything but the logo on an attached monitor. You will be able to reach your installation at http://hassio.local:8123 using any web browser.

If your router doesn’t support mDNS then you’ll have to use the IP address of your Pi, instead of hassio.local, for example http://192.168.0.9:8123. You should be able to find the IP address of your Pi from the admin interface of your router.

Also depending on your internet speed it can take longer than 20 minutes to update.

The documentation might need to be updated as I just completed a new install on a NUC and get the same results. As @tom_l pointed out, if you go dig, the install succeeded, there just wasn’t any text like the documentation states.

The documentation says

Insert SD card to Raspberry Pi and turn it on. On first boot, it downloads the latest version of Home Assistant which takes ~20 minutes (slower/faster depending on the platform).

I don’t see anything about something on the screen.

Thank you to all replys! I left it going over night and its working this morning! Playing around with it today. I have zoneminder on a Dell 2950 server I will connect up, same with the samsung smart tv and the denon avr. Then the plan is for the combi to be added and lighting.

Should definitely add something about using the Pi’s IP to the docs as not all devices will resolve hassio.local even if the router does.

Yes i had to use the PIs local ip address rather than hassio.local. I knew it was headless and would only see the logo, however it said about 20 minutes. mine took all night, even with 78mb fiber optic connection :sa:
All is well now though, thanks!
