As a new HA user am I still learning every day, often by trial and error, but this is something I cannot seem to fix.
Often - I would say 2 out of 3 times - when starting CarPlay in my car it shows just a blank screen. The only remedy is to stop the car disconnect CarPlay and try again.
Details:
Home Assistant 2025.6.1
iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 18.5)
Anyone else having these issues? And are there ways to troubleshoot this?
Genuine question - Are you sure this is a HA issue and not a generic CarPlay issue?
Android Auto does the same thing to me once in a blue moon. I’ve narrowed it down to the screen switching to the reverse cam right as Android Auto is booting up. Now I simply wait a couple of seconds until I see the splash screen before putting my car in reverse and the issue hasn’t shown up in months.
Something is definitely wrong - it’s not just you. I’m a long time HASS user and I started getting this too - I thought this was just me. It’s been happening to me as of the last week or so. Launch the app on CarPlay totally blank screen. Super annoying as I’m using it to open/close my garage door.
It’s just the home assistant app. None of the other apps I use do it (which admittedly are only Spotify / Apple Music / Google Maps / Apple Maps).
Exiting the HASS app on the phone and then re-launching it typically fixes many of these kinds of issues, but not this time. I’ve also rebooted my iOS device.
I’m on Core 2025.6.3, Supervisor 2025.06.2, OS 15.2, Frontend 20250531.4
My device is iPhone 16 running iOS 18.5, car is a Nissan Leaf from 2017.
I just launched the companion app and cleared the front end cache. I’ll report back in the next few days if that fixes it.
At first - I’m a new user of Home Assistant - it was about 1 out of 3 times I drive the car, but now it seems to happen even more frequently, like 3 out of 4. That is quite annoying since I need it to open the new gate. It’s a 2024 Volvo XC90 T8 for the record, but I don’t think it has anything to do with the car, just with the HA - iOS combination.
So far, I have not identified a specific pattern or easy way to ‘reset’ it. I think it is time to raise an issue at GitHub. Anyone reading this, please add new details if you have some insights in conditions of temporary fixes, so I can add it to the issue.
Started having the same issue over the last couple of weeks. In a way, I’m glad I’m not the only one.
I’ve got aftermarket Pioneer unit in my car and I assumed it was that as the Carplay function is flaky at best and definitely not as seamless as advertised.
One thing I want to investigate further ( the next topic I’ll be searching on the forums) is that If i don’t open the companion app on my phone for say 30 mins, it acts as if it goes to sleep in the background. When I open it up, even if it is in the bunch of already open apps, it reloads as if I’m opening it for the first time. I’m wondering if this is related to it not launching properly via Carplay and just showing the blank screen.
