Is there a way to change the default ‘card’ or ‘control’ that is used to visualise/manipulate entities in the auto-generated pages such as the overview and device entities pages?
Specifically, i’d like to use the ‘slide-to-confirm’ card found in HACS to replace the default buttons to open/unlock my front gate and door. But for now (just started using HA) i’m quite happy with the auto-generated overview and it seems overkill to have to create an entire new dashboard just to change those 2 buttons.
From the HA documents: Built-in dashboards are available out of the box, cannot be deleted, and there are limited options on how much you can edit them.
I don’t use the built-in dashboards, but I’m pretty sure you will need to add a new dashboard to add new cards.
Thanks for the reply. As a new user it’s a bit confusing to start right now as lots of documentation online says you can ‘take control’ of the dashboard, but that seems to be in an older version. The new overview dashboard is apparently very new. And like i said, i like it and wouldn’t want to change the dashboard itself. I was hoping the entity itself had some kind of property where you could select/override the default card used, by going to settings → devices. But seeing how its quite new maybe this is a feature in the making.
Yes, very new. it was introduced in February (2026.2 update). Any mention of “take control of the overview dashboard” is for older versions.
Maybe. New features have been added since it was introduced. You can always check update/beta release notes to see what’s new & upcoming. This month’s update 2026.5 (currently in beta) is due next week on 5/6/26. It includes new dashboard features. Since I don’t use it, I scrolled by that section, so not sure what the new dashboard features are. You can check it out here:
