Changing role of zwave controller

Hello all,

how can I change the role of the controller? E.g. from primary to secondary (vice versa).
Could not find anything. Is there a trick?

Z-Wave JS does not support this. It also does not support secondary controllers. You can use the PC Controller software from SiLabs (Windows only) to do it.

Hi freshcoast,

what a pity. Sad to hear that there is no path to go from an existing Z-wave network to HA.
Nevertheless thanks a lot for you quick response.

That’s not accurate. It depends on where you are migrating from. With some controllers you can just perform an NVM backup and restore.

Either way, you can temporarily use PC Controller to do your migration, then switch back to Z-Wave JS. But I personally wouldn’t recommended using a network where the primary controller is not Node 1. Most do not, but unfortunately some devices have problems with that.

The role of the controller is automatically set during inclusion.

I made a video explaining how to migrate your Z-Wave Devices from another hub into home assistant without having to exclude and reinclude every device. The process takes about. 10 minutes to perform after you install the PC Controller Software.

In my video the new controller is not node id #1. I did this intentionally because I knew not every hub supported the same features. If your old hub supports being included as a secondary controller you can perform a few extra steps to make your new controller node id #1.
