Changing the smart meter resets all values to zero (?)

Hi all,
my current smart meter is from the year 2011 and is probably about to be changed “automatically”.
Due to its age, it unfortunately only provides the current meter readings.
If this is now exchanged in the near future, this means that the meter readings will be set to ZERO and more data will definitely be added.
I would like to know what needs to be considered or done in the Home Assistant.
I don’t want to lose my old data.
