Inspired by many topic on this boards, I embarked upon finding a way to mount cheap tablet on my wall(s) as Home Assistant control panels. Fortunately, I had old intercom system, which I was able to rip out and run 24v power thru it’s cables. Details are here in this thread, https://www.houzz.com/discussions/4321917/what-to-do-with-old-wired-intercom-system.
So far have I replaced one panel with Echo and two panels with Amazon Fire HD8 (6th and 10th Gen). For the most part, I have gone with the advice posted here about using FullyKiosk etc. The reason for this post is the mounting solution I came up with which I haven’t seen mentioned before. The pre-made mounts (from etsy and other places) are either expensive and/or have large bezels around. The magnetic mounts look the best but involves sticking metal on the back of tablet and some risk of tablet falling down. So, I decided to buy a cheap case off Amazon and modify it as a mount. While I did this for Amazon Fire HD8, though the idea applies to most other tablets as well. It is cheap, does not require lot of skills or tools, feels sturdy and looks good enough (IMO).
Attached are some pictures.
Here are links to items I ordered:
Power Supply replacing intercom base unit
USB Power for tablets and Echo
Cheap HD8 Case
There are considerations in how I wired power supply that I can post if there is interest. For now, I have not put any automation to control usb power supply (in order to prolong battery life). I haven’t noticed any battery bulge or malfunction in over six months.
Hope this helps someone. If this doesn’t belong to share your projects category, please let me know and I can move it.
