Chromecast Audio and 2nd-gen Chromecast video all stopped working worldwide in Google Home with 'Untrusted Device' error

Chromecast Audio and second-generation Chromecast video devices now all fail to work as global outage, with Google Home app showing ‘Untrusted Device’ error, so it now no longer possible to use Google Cast audio or video casting to these due to expired security certificates, as a 10-year old SSL certificate expired now as perfect example of purposeful planned obsolescence strategy from Google:

For Chromecast Audio there is currently no equivalent Google Cast audio-only product you can buy as a replacement as a Google Cast audio (music) receiever, so many users are stuck in limbo now.

I mean, there are many expensive aternatives, and in the future you can probably simply use the audio-output jack on the Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition, but today it does not support syncronized multi-room audio. Could this community make a better audio-outout-only product to solve this gap and need for inexpensive multi-room audio dongles?

That is, while some hacky workarounds might come, however I think a better follow-up question for the Home Assistant and ESPHome communities is if anyone are working on plug-and-play replacement product for the “Chromecast Audio” dongle with no cloud dependencies for those of us who only want an alternative inexpensive audio-output dongle with no microphone for voice just to use to achieve syncronized multi-room audio with relativly high-quality music playback to external speakers/recievers?

I believe we also need an much more enhanced/improved native media player for ESPHome with advanced features such as syncronized multi-room audio and ability to pair two seperate ESPHome devices a as single stereo pair, and for that to ship with Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition reference firmware? …so maybe either build on Squeezelite media player client or expand the new media player for ESPHome that Nabu Casa created for Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition

Right now my Chromecast Audio devices still work with HA.

Have you looked if they are also still connected in your Google Home app?

Mine say show a little warning triangle with exclamation and say not connected.

Regardless if Google gets it working again or not I am looking for replacements.

The issue with that is have do many Chromecast and Google Nest speakers / Google Home speakers and displays that really need replacements for them all since as it stands now it is not possible to group or sync speakers from different ecosystems if you want to keep the synchronized music playback between multi-room audio systems which Google devices to their credit have previously been able do great on the cheap.

I do not know if it is related but this morning two of my Chromecast devices (*) stopped working and I found out that they were no longer in the Google Home App.
Factory reset on first generation Chromecast (3.5 connection) did not work, even after multiple tries, but Chromecast second generation (HDMI connection did somewhat work, though not yet able to include in Google Group.
I now realize that there is definitely a problem. I wonder whether the new Google Streamer is a solution, though obviously much more expensive.
( * ) My setup: Paired Nest Audio speakers , Paired Google Mini’s and several earlier generation Chromecasts all together in a Google Group for synchronized casting

I spoke to Chromecast Support and they told me that since a few days they are having issues that they are working on. They also told me that, even though they no longer sell these Chromecast devices, they should be working (after resolving the issue).
They told me to give them feedback with the problem I am having and I suggest that you do the same:
1)Open the Google Home app.
2)At the top right, tap your account.
3)Tap Feedback and then the device for which you’d like to submit feedback.
4)To display available emails, in the “From:” section, tap the arrow on the right. Select your email address.
5)In the field provided, enter the details of your feedback. Make sure not to include sensitive information.
6)Be sure to check the box for Screenshot and System logs.
7)To submit feedback, at the upper-right corner, tap Send. Have your device rest for now as we are waiting for the fix for the next 24-48 hours.

I just found this on the internet:
As of March 11, 2025, several developments have emerged regarding Google’s Chromecast devices:

Outage Affecting Second-Generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio Devices

Starting March 10, 2025, users of second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices have reported encountering “Untrusted device” errors, rendering their devices unable to cast content. This issue is attributed to an expired security certificate. Google has acknowledged the problem and is actively working on a fix. Users are advised against performing a factory reset on their devices during this period.

Unfortunately, I did factory resets, so we shall see…

If you did a factory reset can add it back to google home by setting your phones date to one before March 10, 2025. Then go through the normal steps to add it to google home.

Won’t be able to cast to it, but does still work with Music Assistant Addon.

This worked for me and am now going down another path to move away from google.

Thanks. You are a genius. It worked and in fact I can cast to it from HA

I have 7 chromecast audios feeding my whole-house audio distribution system. What can I replace that with? Juke has multi-zone amps that does spotify connect but not chromecast.

What path are you going down to avoid Google? Wiim? Something pi-based?

4 days and counting of my Chromecast Audio not being available outside of Home Assistant, and I’m looking for alternatives as well.

Long-term I am hoping that ESPHome and Nabu Casa developers will add and extend/improve media streaming clients for Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition so that we can just use the audio out-put jack on it and similar ESPHome based devices. I have posted these two related feature requests:

It would be great if an esphome device with audio out could appear in Spotify connect somehow. That would pretty much solve my multi-zone issue, buy a bunch of M5 stacks to my distribution amp.

You can already do that with the Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition hardware if you use the latest Music Assistant Server as the integration (middleware) between it and your Spotify app, see:

Specifically read this section:

If you are unfamiliar with Music Assistant then first read:

Still hoping for better native media player support inside the ESPHome firmware though as Music Assistant have other limitations.

Yep am aware of that. Thanks. It would just be a shame to buy seven of the Voice preview edition devices, all with microphones and speakers that wouldn’t be used, a simple esphome chip to relay to my amplifier would be the perfect solution.

I followed @Smokingbarry 's advise and all my Chromecast devices work and HA casting as as before. All my Google audio devices are in a Google Home Group and interestingly re-adding the Chromecasts to the group, after I did a factory reset, only worked with changing the date of my Iphone to before March 9. Once added I put the Iphone back to current date and it keeps working.
