Clearing Out My Home Lab – Making Items Available Here

Hi Everyone,

Some time back I was given a less than positive cancer diagnosis, and as a result, I ceased working in my home lab. It’s now time to clear my home lab out. Over the years it’s grown into quite a collection of gear, much of it related to ESPHome, ESP32/ESP8266, and of course Home Assistant.

I’m not sure if posts like this are allowed here, so please forgive me if I’m overstepping, but I thought it made sense to share with this community. I’ve been part of the HA forum for many years, and I feel an affinity with the folks here. I figured the people here would likely be able to put this gear to better use than most others.

My home lab has been offline for about six months now. Between treatments and everything else, I haven’t had the time or energy to sort it out, and I really don’t want to leave that burden on my wife.

My initial thought was to list the items on eBay and then share the links here. But if there’s a better or more forum community-friendly way to do this, I’d really appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks for reading, and for being a community I’ve valued being part of for so long.

Mark

Wish you and your family well.
eBay and links here (in social) would be my choice.
Facebook marketplace is used a lot in US — not sure you country — as well.

Hi There, thanks for the reply. I am located in Australia. I’ll go with links here, and if anyone objects I can adjust from there. Thanks for the well wishes.

Thought I would post some photos of the items I have. What’s in the photos is only a small amount of the total. I was wondering, should I create bundles of items, and if so what would those bundles be?

All advice appreciated.

My heart goes out to you. I wish my wife had done the same with her stuff.

My advice is to make a list of everything, put all of it in a box. Put a note on the box, “Pay It Forward”. Put a price on the box. Put that price with the list on eBay and/or wherever. Resolve to call it good with no second thoughts. If it sells, it sells, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

Then move onto the next item on your bucket list.

I know how you feel and it would be really hard for me to take my own advice.

My life is better because I brushed up next to you. Thank you.

Bit of an update of sorts.

I have come to an agreement with the awesome team at the https://www.hackmelbourne.org/ to donate most of the IoT style components I have in my lab. They are an amazing team located in Hawthorn Melbourne, and I urge you to read about them and join in if you have time and are in the area.

The remaining items I will add to eBay and post the links here. There’s a bunch of things, including network switches, Home Assistant Yellow, home lab server, a rack mount SMB QNAP server, etc. So keep a look out for it all.

Above may take time as I only have days I am not working (yes I still work part time) and the days I am not unwell between chemo treatments. We will get there and thanks again for the support.

Wasn’t sure what to do with this item, hadn’t planned on parting with it to be honest. Thought I would post some photos and seek suggestions.

This unit was my homelab server. It is a Silverstone 4RU case, a SuperMicro H11SSL-i Rev 2.0 EPYC Server Motherboard with 7551P CPU (32-core CPU with 64 threads) and 128Gb REGECC DDR4 memory. Includes a Tesla P4 GPU, an ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 Card, and an Intel 10Gb network card.

I was running Proxmox on this server, accommodating a number of workloads. The server was working until being shutdown and wiped.

Lots of possibilities in this case, with the addition of additional hard drives etc. So let me know the thinking on this one. Do I put it on eBay, or are people interested in discussing directly here?

Hi Mark, I bumped on your thread while browsing the latest topics and just out of curiosity about what, and how, you sell stuff I cannot avoid on leaving a more personal reply.

This is not the kind of thing anyone wants to bump on but I cannot just click away from it…
This is the only forum that I’m fairly active in and it’s a wonderful community so that’s why, even being a lot less lately due to circumstances, I hang out here often to learn new stuff and payback by trying to help.

Sorry to read about your situation…
I really hope and wish for you that you are somehow physically comfortable and that your mental/emotional state also is as good as possible.

I wish you and your loved ones all the strength to handle what you are going through!
