Companion app seems to occasionally open new Chrome instance when clicking on links

I have a super weird problem. I have an Upwork job alert in HA that sends a message to my phone with the URL of the project. Occasionally, it seems to open a brand new Chrome instance. Once that happens, I’m unable to get to my original Chrome instance with all its tabs until some indeterminate amount of time.

Right now, I think I probably have at least three instances that it seems to randomly route between. Here’s the NR code I’m using to create the message.

{

    "title": "Upwork Alert",

    "message": "{{article.title}}",

    "data": {

        "group": "Upwork",

        "actions": [

            {

                "action": "URI",

                "title": "Open Url",

                "uri": "{{{article.permalink}}}"

            }

        ],

        "clickAction": "{{{article.permalink}}}"

    }

}

Any ideas what the heck could be going on here?

if the URL is not the same as your HA instance then yes a new instance of chrome will open up

But you see the problem with that, right? Is there any way to not do that?

this is more chrome related behavior than the app, the app tells android to open chrome and use that link. The app should not open that link internally. On my own pixel 7 pro it always adds a new tab.

On my Pixel 6 Pro, it randomly opens a tab or spawns a new instance. There doesn’t appear to be any sort of consistency. Have you heard of this issue? Any chance you can think of a workaround?

i have never heard of this issue but you can always file a bug on github to get the team to look at it.
