TL; DR: Recently I tried one more time to use Voice assistant, and quickly understand what still it is impossible for non Latin alphabet users.
More details: When I set pure Cyrillic name in ESPHome I usually hit issue with entity IDs eat each other because HA strip all non-latin letters from names and it show only one ID.
Exampe topic: ESPHome merges Temperature and Humidity from DHT11
Old Github issue: Non-English characters in entity names · Issue #4628 · home-assistant/core · GitHub
As workaround Cyrillic users make names a bit cryptic: like add numbers, english words or switch to English completely, while in HA cards add Cyrillic names where needed. This lasting for years.
This year HA community put giant amount of work to localize everything and make Voice Assistants work. I try to use it and hit hard to this design: if I have more than 1 simple device with 1 entity in room (which is of cource true for every my room), I must use those cryptic names, i.e. not say simple “turn on livenroom lamp” but “turn on livenroom lamp 3” or one of those words will be in different language.
This is unusable. I feel like in mid 200x (20 years ago! Oh my…) when UTF-8 come to Linux and put garbage here and there in old apps.
So, is there a way to use full non-Latin names in ESPHome (which transliterates them flawlessly btw) and make HA aware of them to finally start using of Voice Assistants for non-Latin languages?
P.S. Hm, this topic good candidate for WTH month, heh.
