So, I have a Kasa (Matter) Smart plug (KP125M) that I still cannot working with HA or Apple Home… I just having it working in the Kasa App and since I don’t always have my phone on me I often walk into a dark office where I have to press the button on the switch (not easy to reach) or find my phone… I was thinking that it would be nice if I had a wall switch that would trigger this smart plug.
Right now the wall switch contains a GE Dimmer (Z-Wave) that’s wired to a switched outlet that is on the wrong side of the room so it’s not in use. I suppose I could move the floor standing lamp back to that location and maybe that’s the best solution. But, what if I wanted to toggle the state of the smart plug? Have you done something like that?
Please tell me that ‘dimmer’ is in relay mode? Wiring a dimmer to an outlet is a violation of the NEC in the US (406.15).Im fairly certain this also applies to dimmers in relay mode because of the simple fact that they CAN be turned back into a dimmer through software… So the dimmer really should not be there. A smart switch with a relay is acceptable
(cannot apply dimmer to an outlet because you don’t know if induction loads will be plugged in - induction load + dimmer = bad juju) induction load in most cases=something with an electric motor. Code was amended in 2016 (because under cabinet lighting) to allow a dimmer outlet ONLY if you apply a specialized recepticle to prevent standard 15-20a plugs.
If you instead had the wall switch wired to not control a load and the outlet permanently wired (assuming it’s also ZWave) you could direct associate the switch and outlet and NOT violate NEC (the dimmer is the problem, this would break that connection)
Also you now have essentially a wall control that could be used for ZWave direct association for any ZWave device on your network.
Or in the case of your Kasa if you ever manage to get it in HA have it mirror state of the switch through automation.
Note ZWave direct association will continue working if HA is down. The automation method will not.
Id be correcting that dimmer situation first though.
