Configuring a First Alert Z-Wave Smoke Detector & Carbon Monoxide Alarm

I bought a First Alert Z-Wave Smoke Detector & Carbon Monoxide Alarm last week, and while I was able to get it to join my Z-Wave network, in the device list, it appears as “Node 10” and doesn’t have any sensors associated with it.

I did some searches, and there are some notes on how to set up the custom configuration for the old Z-Wave integration (e.g., First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Setup - Configuration / Z-Wave - Home Assistant Community (home-assistant.io)

But that doesn’t work with ZWave JS, and I haven’t been able to find anything equivalent.

So - How can I do this?

It needs to complete the interview for entities to be discovered. Pull the battery tray, hold down the test button and re-insert. Maybe need to do it multiple times.

To be clear - do I need to remove/readd the device from Home Assistant before pulling the battery? Or just pull the battery w/o doing anything from Home Assistant?

No, just let it finish the interview with that procedure.

I am quite late to the party, but this is how I did it with Z Wave js, as I too struggled:

I used the QR code (on the device itself) to add it to the network. It showed as successfully added but I was not seeing it.
I went into the Z Wave JS UI, found the new node, and configured it there.
It showed in HA immediately.

I had a situation where I could integrate several First Alert smoke/CO detectors then I couldn’t, no matter how many times I tried to reset the device. I went into the Z-wave integration and via the three dots on the right, reloaded it. My device now appeared.

I got the same situation about the impossibility of adding this equipment to HA… Here is my step-by-step procedure to connect it to HA.

  1. In Settings > Z-Wave Menu > Z-Wave JS,
    a. click 3 vertical dots
    b. move down to “Reload” and select to reload the Integration

  2. Factory reset First Alert Z-Wave Smoke & Carbon Detector
    a. open battery case
    b. remove battery
    c. push and hold reset button
    d. insert battery and reinsert battery slider
    e. wait until the end of the LONG beep ~ 5-8 seconds and release reset button

  3. Enter in pairing mode in HA
    a. In Settings > Z-Wave > Add device
i- Click on “Advance Security Options”
    ii- Select Legacy Secure
Note: make attention to the (o) Click option, which often deselect itself
    iii- Click “Search for Device”

  4. Enable pairing mode for First Alert Z-Wave Smoke & Carbon Detector
    a. open battery case
    b. remove battery
    c. push and hold reset button
    d. insert battery and reinsert battery slider
    e. wait until the end of the SHORT beep ~ 0.5 seconds and release reset button

  5. Normally, HA should find the device

Good luck folks.

This procedure works with 2x devices “First Alert ZCombo” migrated from Samsung SmartThings hub v3 to HA

Device: (First Alert Battery Powered Z-Wave Smoke Detector & Carbon Monoxide Alarm, Works with Ring Alarm Base Station, 2nd Generation - Amazon.com)

Is there any chance of getting help on this subject? I am trying to add this detector to HA, but it constantly says ‘provisioned but NOT included in the network’. I realize I need to finish some interview? but my unit has a sealed battery, with no way of removing it. Do I have to return the unit, and buy something that will integrate easier into HA? Any comments would be appreciated.

This topic is for the older version of the smoke alarm. Perhaps you will find more insight at First Alert Smoke/CO Detector - New ZCOMBO Replacement Model (SMCO410).
