Configuring Home Assistant as Wifi Router

Hello all, I’m new to Home Assistants. I have two IoT devices that I have connected to HS. However, to controll the devices I need to connect my HS Raspberry Pi to my home network as well as the two devices I’m controlling. Both devices only operate over WIFI they do not have Bluetooth.

Does anybody know a way to make the Raspberry Pi HS device to act as its on router and have the IoT devices connect to the HS directly instead of throught a network?

I’m bringing the IoTs and my Raspberry Pi HS device camping and I don’t want to have to bring a router as this will add to the power consuption of the system?

What exactly are you hoping to accomplish with this system?

By “HS” I assume you mean “HA”. It sounds like you want HA to be a WiFi Access Point (AP) which would allow your WiFi IOT devices to connect directly to HA instead of through your Home Router/Gateway.

You can probably Google “HA WiFi Access Point” and see what you come up with.
Here is one interesting Thread on this topic I found:

Thank you guys so much for the response. Tom_I, let me explain my current setup and then explain what I would like to accomplish. By the way, I did mean “HA” not “HS” Tommy Long.

Currently, I have HA installed in a Raspberry Pi 4b. The RPi is connected via ethernet to my home lan.

I have two Tuya LED strips connected to HA via my home network. The two Tuya devices, TYWE3S, only have WiFi 2.4Ghz b,g,n connectivity, no Bluetooth is available.

For the light to communicate to the HA controller, there is a DHCP router that negotiates the traffic.

Now, I would like to takes this set up to a camping trip. However, I would need some type of mini, low powered portable WiFi router, so the HA controller can comunicate with the Tuya lights.

I do know that the Raspberry Pi 4b can act as a wifi router, so I was wondering if there was a way to use the same Raspberry Pi device to run the WiFi, DHCP server and Home Assistant all at once therefore eliminating the need for a router.

Or have the RP connect dirrectly to the LED strips with some ad-hoc WiFi solution.

One solution I was considering, was installing Debian on the Raspberry Pi and run HA in a docker container. I have no idea if that would work and if I have the skills to do this at all.

I figure however, that before I go off biting more than I can chew, I should come here to the forum and ask smarter minds then mine if they know of a simpler solution. Maybe a Home Assistant app or add-on that acomplishes my goal.

Thank you Tommy for the sugestion, I’ll look into that app to see if it does what I need.

You are still talking about your chosen solution rather than why you are doing this.

You want to be able to wirelessly control two LED strips while out camping. Why?

Is there an automation involved?

Sensors?

Or do you just want to be able to manually turn them on and off remotely?

If the latter there is definitely a much simpler solution than using HA.

Also how big are these LED strips?

They are probably going to be a significantly larger load than a wifi router (depending on how long they are on for).

You would still need a router, as the Tuya integration uses the cloud. If you don’t have internet access, you can’t control them. And if you have internet access, use the Smartlife or Tuya app to control them.
