Connect ZWA-2 anywhere: Use Z-Wave over Wi-Fi or PoE

Just migrated mine to the POE variant and it works like a charm. Now also the water pump in the garden has connection  The smoke detectors are sleeping  The water pump is a long range device. The others not.

Apparently, a big part of the latency for USB device over WiFi/Ethernet was the select timeout in the ESPHome event loop. That has been worked around in ESPHome 2025.11.0. According to the numbers in the release announcement, we should be able to shave off 16 ms from that maximum delay, to a relatively constant 15-16ms latency or ZWA-2 over Ethernet. Would be interesting to have new measurements with the current code base to compare and see if real-world performance measures up.

For the WiFi setup: I have accented characters ā€œĆ¶ā€, multiple times to be exact, now the issue here is that it does not connect to that. A similar network without accented names in the SSID works like a charm though.
Also, the accented one is a Deco mesh setup, but I would highly doubt that something like fast roaming would be the issue here, because very old IoT stuff can connect to it, I think it is just an oversight regarding accented SSIDs.

I disagree. With ssid you really need to avoid spaces and special characters. Just keep it simple so it works most of the times.

didnt see anyone ask/talk about the POE board that is shown in the pic above

now that would be acceptable, but checking the looks of the Waveshare

I cant imagine that to be a great solution in the user space…

can we order the thing with the case somewhere ?

too bad we can not install thePOE software on the ZWA-2 itself and use a simple POE injector, wonder why that cant be done, given the chip inside?

For reference, there is a related feature request / ideas discussion here → Make an ESPHome-based universal USB-to-Ethernet Bridge, a USB to Serial-over-IP (Serial-over-LAN) proxy appliance compatible with standard Z-Wave Controller and Zigbee Coordinator USB adapters Ā· tube0013/tube_gateways Ā· Discussion #239 Ā· GitHub

Or a ā€œPoE docking baseā€ for the antennas… where the base and the antennas would stack or even fit like legos. Then it suddenly would be able to accommodate both the Zigbee and Z-wave antennas also from Nabu Casa

Yes it is the idea of having such compatible networked USB-hubs bridge concept for remotley connecting to USB IoT radio adapters and other USB serial adapters that this suggestion discussion here is about → Make an ESPHome-based universal USB-to-Ethernet Bridge, a USB to Serial-over-IP (Serial-over-LAN) proxy appliance compatible with standard Z-Wave Controller and Zigbee Coordinator USB adapters Ā· tube0013/tube_gateways Ā· Discussion #239 Ā· GitHub

Would be awesome if Nabu Casa or someone else made a finished product anyone could buy that out-of-the-box is an single appliance that offer multi-port networked USB-hub Serial-over-IP bridge that allow users to remotley connect several USB IoT radio adapters. Preferably with optional PoE support.

That is, suggesting a 4-port networked USB-hub that enable universal Serial-over-IP proxy compatbility with popular Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread USB radio adapter, and hopefully can also have built-in Bluetooth proxy support for added value.
