Control motorised sunscreen / awning

Hi everyone,

In a few months I will be moving to a new house. This gives me a lot of inspiration for new things to automate. One of them is the motorised sunscreen (or awning, English isn’t my first language, I’m not exactly sure what to call it).

Given that the entire backside of the house is made up out of windows and a glass door, I was thinking of using the awning to keep the sun out of the house during the summer months in order to keep it as cool as possible.

I made a quick formula to calculate how far (in percentages) the awning has to be extended to just keep the sun out of the house given the elevation of the sun at that time. What I am struggling to find however is the hardware I’d need for this.

Basically I’m looking for a way to connect the up and down control of the awning to Home Assistant, preferably in a way where I have some feedback on how far it’s extended.

I’m also thinking of adding a vibration sensor and some other checks to see if it’s safe to extend the awning, but right now I’m mainly stuck on finding the right hardware to control it. Any suggestions to what I should look into? Suggestions for making it a more bulletproof setup would also be very much appreciated of course!

Thanks!

These are brilliant. Not cheap, but brilliant. Will require you having a Z-Wave transceiver.

Hi
I’m using a Shelly 2.5 for controlling my awning.
It works very well and also has the position controll feature.
