Converting new Tuya-based smart plug with energy montoring

I am just getting started with Home Assistant and ordered some Tuya-based smart plugs with energy monitoring:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079Q5W22B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have been reading about flashing these to Tasmota or ESPHomeYAML with Tuya-Convert but have also read that it’s not possible with the newest firmware on them because Tuya has secured it from updating without certificate.

I would very much like to make these local-only device, not communicating with external servers and integrate them with Home Assistant.

I am not afraid to crack them open and solder to them but was wondering if there were any clear instructions on this (I can only find instructions for OTA update with Tuya-Convert).

I assume there must be some way to solder onto the UART and force flash it with Tasmota or ESPHomeYAML, i just can’t find any clear instructions.

Any help would be great appreciated.

Hey, did you get any response? Same scenario here :frowning:

I would stay away from them. Recently bought a four pack and found out they now use the Realtec chip which doesn’t work with Tuya convert.

Not I got three more of these trying to figure out wtf to do with them :frowning:

As a long overdue follow-up, the ones i bought work with the update to Tuya-Convert that came out in Sep 2019.

But as mr337 said, the newest ones look to have a new chip that Tuya-Convert wont work on so i’m glad i have my old ones.

I have got a blog post here which explains over the air flashing of tuya based devices step by step
