I attended the State of the Open Home 2026, and it was great to see everything that’s being built across the open home ecosystem.
During one of the demos, I saw a presentation of Sendspin where a user could scan a QR code and instantly join a synchronized music session. The music was streamed and played in sync over the internet, even when users were not on the same local network.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to recreate something similar, but I haven’t managed to get it working yet. Maybe I’m missing a few steps, or perhaps the required functionality isn’t available yet. That’s why I’m reaching out here.
Does anyone have suggestions, examples, or pointers on how to share and synchronize music playback outside of a home network?
My current setup is:
HA OS on a NUC core 2026.8.2
HA cloud
Music assistant 2.9.13
My use case is scouting. I’m a scout leader, and the scouts love music. During camps and events there are often multiple speakers playing different playlists at the same time. It would be great if I could manage or synchronize the music across those speakers so everyone can enjoy the same music together, instead of listening to several different songs at once .
What sort of power do you have available? Mains supply or battery or whatever?
What sort of speakers are you trying to connect, google, alexa, bluetooth or something else?
But by far the easiest way would be a server onsite running MA, and connect the speakers to that as sendspin speakers. I know you can do this with bluetooth and google not sure about others. As for a qr code to connect them I have no idea.
What I’m trying to achieve is something similar, but with my own playlist.
My idea is that kids can scan a QR code or click a link on their phone. They would then automatically be added as a player in the Music Assistant (MA) players list and be able to listen to the same music stream on their own devices.
The goal is to synchronize playback across multiple phones, even when those devices are outside my home network. I’m looking for a way to make joining the stream as simple as possible: scan, connect, and listen.
