Custom-sidebar: personalise Home Assistant's sidebar per user or device basis

JFYI,
A new option has been introduced to set the sidebar width. It should cover your use case.

please be aware this resource is seriously impacted by the new HA release 2026.2, now in beta.

Author is aware.
if you really rely on the resource, keep an eye on the repo and release notes.

your instance wont be borked, but the niceties this fine plugin provides are partly broken

In Home Assistant 2026.2.0, the Developer tools item has been moved into the config dashboard. Just for those that want to bring back this item to the sidebar and make it look close to what it was, add this simple configuration.

order:
  - new_item: true
    item: Developer tools
    href: /config/developer-tools
    icon: 'mdi:hammer'
    bottom: true
    order: 1
  - item: config
    match: href
    bottom: true
    divider: true
    order: 2

It is not the same as before because now the bottom items are fixed, but close enough.

Hello,

it don’t work in my instalation (HA 2026.2.1). I have inserted your lines in configuration.yaml.

Result:
Warning:
“Integration error: order - Integration ‘order’ not found.”

Greetings,
Eckart

Hi @Eckart,
custom-sidebar is a custom JavaScript plugin, you need to install the plugin first, and then create a configuration (you cannot add it to Home Assistant’s configuration.yaml). Check the plugin documentation to know the steps that you need to do to get it working.

It’s wild that Home Assistant still doesn’t include a simple, universal “Hide items” feature for sidebar items. Its current approach of hiding things per instance just isn’t practical when you want something hidden for every user across the board. I wish they would just turn all sidebar items into dashboards that you could manage with the “Dashboards” settings.

Thank you for the plugin!

Fantastic addition. Really great code and commitment to this.

It is bonkers that HA hasn't integrated this. Like, having a per user experience seems like a no-brainer and the next thing you would setup after having users.

@elchininet Have you reached out to HA to see if they want to integrate this into the code and hire you?

Hi Eksistenze,
During the 2026.4 beta it was mentioned that sidebar edition (on top of the current custom panel) will come in future updates but it has not reached the roadmap yet. When sidebar natively counts with some easy way to add custom links per user (not sure if devices will be included, I don't think so), I would be happy to discuss new features/improvements with the team and contribute to the implementation. In that moment maybe several things from this plugin can be ported to the native code.

Is there no way to hide these fixed items on the bottom of the sidebar? Settings is generally the second item on my list but now it's also the second to last item on my list and I can't figure out how to make it or Notifications go away.

Hi @derekmarch,
All the items can be hidden in the same way, it doesn't matter if they are in the top or in the bottom, the only note is that the notifications item cannot be matched by href because it doesn't have one.

Edit: if you have Settings as the second item in your list, it should be because you added it manually, because natively, Settings is located in the bottom. If you created it with custom-sidebar, you could move it from the bottom to the top instead of duplicating it.

Regards

Yeah I have this in my config.... Used to only show up as the second item at the top but at some point since I first built this it now ALSO shows up at the bottom.

  • new_item: true
    item: Settings
    href: "/config/dashboard"
    icon: mdi:cog
    order: 1

It makes sense, you are creating a new item called Settings but you are not doing anything with the native Settings so you end up with two.

You only need to take the settings and move it to the top (and give it the order that you want). Replace that new item with this one.

order:
  item: '/config'
  match: 'href'
  exact: true
  bottom: false
  order: 1

Thank you, I knew it had to be some kind of simple tweak of my year old code. I will give this a try when i get back.

It does not appear to have worked, Settings still shows up as the second item on my list and on the bottom. Also nothing would work without the href: value. But I played with a bunch of combinations of everything and nothing made the Settings button disappear from the bottom section of the sidebar.

You are suffering from caching issues. If you have only one Settings without new_item in your config, you cannot get two Settings. Follow the Troubleshooting steps and if you cannot solve the caching issues, check the debug information enabling the debug mode and post your results.

Is anyone else on iOS companion app also experiencing the notification tray not sliding back in ?

Also often times when notifications are actually alive , opening the tray shows empty.

I have not noticed it on Android.

Ok thx. Asking here because this component mods the sidebar obviously and in release thread only a few responded .

Didn’t get to fully test my further mods on UIX yet so needs more study …

Not a caching issue, did a full delete of the HA cache and tried it on completely different devices. I can make changes and reload scripts and see the changes after refreshing. But nothing gets the Settings off the bottom left of the sidebar. It's not that big of a deal really, just thought it would be something simple.

EDIT: Ha, well it was something dumb. The old installation path settings / file naming still worked from a much older install of this. I went through and updated the configuration path to point to the right js version and now the arguments you have given me work. Never thought to go back and re-do all that because everything I configured back in the day was still working.

Please, follow the Troubleshooting that I linked and post the debug if you don't solve the caching issue. If you have only one Settings item without new_item property and you are getting two Settings items you are 100% getting a cached version (caching is not something that occurs only in your local browser/device). You can refer to the multiple issues in the repo that mention caching issues but specially this one that was the last discussions related to the topic.
