Data usage Android mobile app

I never paid any attention to the data consumption of the mobile app until this morning. I do run quite a substantial Homeassistant installation, but this shouldn’t be reflected in this enormous consumption I believe. Every month it is about 100 gigabyte of background data usage…

Any tips on how I can find out what is going wrong?

It seems probable that this is due to video. Are you running multiple cameras? HD? 4K?

I would guess this is mostly wifi traffic.

I do have 4 camera’s connected, but none of them are being used in dashboards. The strange thing is that the vast majority of data is background data. If the camera’s are the culprit, then I would have expected that the data would only be send in foreground (when watching) and not in the background…

Some other things I have thought about:

  1. Can you look in your router to determine how much data you are moving through the router for the device ip? Do they match?

  2. Do you have a short polling time set on your devices. I think the default is 1 minute but don’t hold me to that number.

  3. if you are running supervised, have you looked at the logs. on the Supervisor → System page? You can select Supervisor, core host, dns, Audio, Multicast.

  4. Are you storing and using alot of data for graphing etc?

Ok, this is strange! I just looked at the data consumption of the app and it turned back to reasonable numbers. Not just now, but also historically (see screenshot). This is really weird, but at least solves the issue for now.

just fyi, I have had this happen when I’ve used webrtc for cameras in my lovelace views even though I was not looking at them. I removed webrtc and problem went away.
