Default dashboard view not saving/working/hard/etc

I don’t know why this is so hard hang on while I glue all my hair back on.
In my setup I have one use me and I have set myself up as admin from the beginning. So I start with the overview dashboard and added some cards and entities and all the good stuff you can do with HA and all is good. I log out and long in and everything is golden. At this point I created a new dashboard called “Davids Dashboard” I decide I want to refine the sidebar so while I am viewing the overview I click on my profile then change the order or hide items from the sidebar. All the items in the sidebar allow me to pick them and then I can click the “X” to remove them. I start by just removing “Energy” I see it fall off the sidebar but not completely it drops to the bottom and the “X” changes to a “+” ok so I get it thats fine. I click done and the sidebar editing collapses and hey I say to myself that looks good. I log out and login back in again and “Energy” is back. It is not hidden. At this point I try everything I can find reading on the subject which there seems to be an overabundance on for something you would think would be this easy but nothing works. restart HA, clear cache, clear cookies, try different browsers, reboot my computer, it just goes on and on the things I have no tried and just can’t get this to save anything. Ultimately I wanted to be able to have HA go right to my “Davids Dashboard” when I David login but I can’t get that to work either. I’ve tried many attempts being logged in as myself to set my default dashboard to “Davids Dashboard” but that doesn’t get save as well no matter how I try to set that it reverts back to the “Overviews (default)” after I change it and log back in. I’ve tried to go into the configuration/dashboards and selected “Davids Dashboard” and “set as default on this device” then “Update” but get this error. extra keys not allowed @ data[‘mode’]. Got ‘storage’ extra keys not allowed @ data[‘url_path’]. Got ‘davids-dashboard’
Something is wrong somewhere I’m hoping I am doing something wrong and this is not a bug. It’s not that I feel this is too difficult to do like I’ve read many folks saying it is just not working.
Any help would be appreciated I’m really liking HA now I hope I can get this solved.
regards
David

I answered part of my own question I update the core and versions which I saw there were and the error I get when I clicked update is gone however this is the behavior I see still

  1. I login and edit my sidebar and remove a couple things and click done.

  2. I logout and login back in again and the items on the side bar are back.

  3. I login and edit my sidebard and remove a couple things and click done.

  4. I don’t log out but close my browser then open it again and navigate to HA and it looks perfect.

It seems that things only come back and my default dashboard does not stay as default if I log out and log back in again after I remove items from the sidebar and set my default dashboard. Why is that I would expect it to save my setup to use again if i log out and back in again. This is pretty annoying

Yes, you get an “Access Token” every time you “log in”, it’s “no longer valid”(thou stored , Refresh Tokens) when you log out, why they don’t store “Device Setting” properly is a mystery to me, as i also thought that
… User Settings AND Device Settings, should be handled differently/separately … i still haven’t found the “logic” … User Settings should be Stored(attached to user) on the server, Device Setting could be as-well, but normal (i guess) is in “cookies” …

Thanks… I’m not sure how secure this is if you set up a dashboard for a individual and remove items from their sidebar you do not want them to have only to have them come back if they log out and back in again. Storing settings for this in cookies/sessions not good. storing in server good.
I would have thought this would have been something seen/figured out long ago. No sense giving a login for my wife unless I want everything just screwed up and have to start over every time she logs in and looks at something

I don’t know how it works when setting up several (individual) users, as im then only one  , thou(so) i just clicked “Keep me logged in” in browser-login, at-least that keeps the settings if not clearing Browser( using same access-token ) … until im not :frowning: …pretty "weird “concept” )

agreed weird and cumbersome. I can send you some hair from my head. This keeps asking if I want to upload a picture to my profile for this blog. I should upload a before and after

lol , i could use some “extra” hair(due to age, i guess) , but i haven’t digged deeper in this as said, so it rarely happens for me … Have you tried setting up another user, and “define” restriction for this Person, login/logout, or are you just “assuming” as “Admin” , maybe it’s “different” , … and they are just “bullying” Admins

I have my wife set up and she is not an admin. I read that the settings were per machine so adding/removing items from the sidebar would not have been a problem since she would be accessing with her own laptop but I wanted it to select the same shared dashboard. Could be worse at least lights and whatever are not just randomly turning on and off because it can’t remember a setting.
I’ll have to tell her let me mess with it first then when you login make sure you check the box that says stayed logged in.

Dashboard you can choose for “only” Admins, soo you choose which Dashboards are allowed for other users
I.E I have Dashboards i would never let anyone else to even look at , more less tamper with

I saw that but it doesn’t seem to affect the sidebar. There are some items on there I don’t want to see too and will never need at this time. I’ll have to make sure I never log out or I’ll just have to go back in and edit the sidebar again and remove the ones I don’t want to see

Yes , so far, seems to be the only option :frowning: … speaking of security

For same reason id never open port 80, for my phone app, or other reasons for that matter, VPN on MAC-level is only way in to my “house” … but still even local, should be “restricted” in HA, and able to log-out without loosing settings, only way is to have login to server, screen-saver with login etc.
i.e, as you mentioned, now your wife is running around, maybe even with HA-app on phone, “Remember Login” … hmmm … guess im blessed being single :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

LOL! I only will forward a port once in a blue moon temporarily. I’d not planned on using HA remote or letting my wife use it remote. I’ve got things on timers etc they will either work or they won’t but I don’t plan on checking if I’m on vacation or away from the house. It’s all good with HA for now I’m rally liking this and the integrations. I saw they had some integration for ESPhome I want to take a look at that

Indeed I love HA, and all options/choices , will entirely use HA for as much as possible/convenient from lights to heating-system and surveillance, … and remotely beside VPN, from 2 specified Devices (Phone+Travel_Laptop) and an External-Hosted website, for “Overview” only

Just found this thread. Happy that I don’t have to pull my hair out (the little that is left) also. Seems others have done this already. It is really weird that these settings are not saved after you logout!

Did something change meantime? Is it possible to save user settings on the server? Setting like a default dashboard constantly gets reset once the user does a logout/log in.
