Detailed energy logging of a power outlet

Hi all,

I have a bit of a specific request. I would like to track exactly how much wattage is being pulled through one of my power outlets with a resolution of around 5 seconds ideally. The goal is to know exactly how many minutes thoughout the day a particular machine is being used (for continuous improvement purposes in the factory I work at).

For this I was thinking of connecting a Zigbee or TP-Link tapo smart outlet to Home assistant using a raspberry pi 4.

Will this work or am I missing something ?

I’m not super savy with electronics and programming (mechanical engineer lol), but I can follow a tutorial and am open to suggestions. Thanks in advance !

Welcome to Home Assistant @jos3!

Your setup should work for what you are needing. A simple pi + a good outlet will report power each time it changes generally. You could also wire in a Shelly which is a bit more instant (some devices have thresholds before they report) and doesn’t require anything extra with your Pi.

That’s good news thanks!
