Device settings name field blank

Hello!

I recently setup a Home Assistant Yellow and have been loving the control I have. I am getting ready to shift all my devices over from SmartThings but I want to ensure I get the naming right. I have one odd issue that I need to figure out because it bugs the heck out of me.

I have added 5 or 6 devices and named them during the pairing process. When I look at device settings, some of the devices Name fields are blank. The device name appears in the title bar of the dialog box correctly.

If I enter a new name, it does change in the dashboard as I would expect. If I then remove all the text from the Name field, it reverts back to the name at pairing.

Is this expected behavior? I am assuming I can just set that to what I want (if needed) and be on my way. Just want to make sure there is not an issue, or there are really two different names.

Thanks!

This is expected behavior.

The device is tracked behind the scenes by something called a “device_id”. The “Device Name” that you are changing is just a user-friendly name to help you organize your devices. You can change it whenever you want without issue. If you don’t set it to anything, there is an automatically generated name. I believe it is a combination of the Manufacturer and the device model number (but I may be mistaken on that).

I finally noticed the edit icon on the right side of the title bar. Changing that also asks me to update the name of the entities.

Thank you!
