Disabling the Energy module?

How can I disable the Energy module? I don’t need it and I want my RAM-strapped system as light as possible.

Is the only way still to remove default_config: from configuration.yaml and add every other component manually?

Unlikely to happen. The devs have made it clear that you have the option of using the default config or running your own config mix. Which TBH is not at all difficult. You just have to read the release notes to see if there is anything new you might want to add. And you should be reading the release notes for breaking changes anyway.

As it is if you want to remove a single integration from default_config: (History, Map, logbook, etc), you need to remove default_config: and manually add every other included integration EXCEPT the one you would like to get rid of. The most obvious solution to me would be to add the option to exclude entries from default_config: in the configuration. Voted. As of now, if user wants to exclude one thing, they have instead to include every other thing, and that list changes over time, so they have to carefully manage that list.

Or, they could just exclude one thing. Seems pretty clear cut use case for a new feature to me.

Nope. It’s default or manage it yourself - which as I said is not difficult at all.
