Disk Space Use Spiking Then Falling

Capture

My disk space is showing some weird behavior… I seems to just keep spiking to 100% and falling back down again. I have no idea what is causing this and my Samba has stopped working as well so I can’t investigate as well.

Do you have an automated snapshot set up?

Is it trying to backup a large media library?

I have a snapshot automation setup but it only runs once a week. Shouldn’t cause it to spike this frequently, should it?

No it shouldn’t.

There’s some information in this topic about chasing down disk usage with portainer or the linux du command.

Could it be some sort of memory shortage and swapping?

I wouldn’t think so… I went overkill on the memory for it when I transferred to NUC.

So looking through that page and digging in the file structure I found the backup directory taking up a HUGE amount of space…

Not sure what’s causing this.

How big are the snapshots?

Do you run something like influxdb and backing up that as well?
Maybe check the folder size for your home Assistent add-ons?

I only keep 4 on the system and they’re each about 1.8 gigs.

So I managed to solve the issue - kinda. I removed the contents of my media folder and the disk space issue stopped. Seems like it was an issue with running out of space mid-snapshot and it would just keep retrying.

You should be able to exclude that folder from your backup.

I was running into the same issue and this was the problem. Thanks!
