DIY bird feeder with camera and home assistant integration

Hi

I want to create my own bird feeder.
Plans are i will print this 3d design
https://makerworld.com/en/models/1239253-smart-bird-feeder-with-integrated-wifi-camera#profileId-1259442

I yet have to decide, which camera i will buy, it will probably depend on cost and integration.

For integration i want to have the following:

  • A picture send to my phone of the bird visiting
  • Bird recognizition would be nice
  • Even nicer if i can click to hear the bird (the song the species has), not the sound at that moment
  • battery percentage monitoring
    • if some king of history from bird visits would be nice too

What would you advice me to buy for camera so this is possible?
How to get it even possible? Im running HA OS on a pi

Us frigate?
Birnetpi?

If solare power is possible its a plus, although long lasting batteries is possible too

Its hard to get a camera in Belgium too for that part.

Is your printer capable of reliably printing ASA?

PETG is not great for prolonged outdoor use.

I wouldn’t use frigate for this, in fact there better ai for free Google Gemini free api. All you need is a camera with onvif and integrate with home assistant so it exposes its motion detection as an entity (binary sensor) and that will be the trigger for Google Gemini to detect whether its a bird or not and send you screen shots. This saves a ton of resource as Google will do the heavy lifting and not your home server.

Unless you already use frigate for your cams its not worth downloading it just for the little birdies lol.
