Currently use DuckDNS w/ Let’s Encrypt and have Port Forwarding working on port 8123. My understanding is that Port Triggering is more secure but I can’t seem to get it to work.
Have a look at this article @BrianM. It describes forwarding as allowing external processes access to devices inside your intranet. Triggering is described as allowing devices devices inside your intranet to use protocols outside your intranet.
Eg. You’re at the coffee shop and you want to use your phone to access you Home Assistant. This would be port forwarding. Your at home and you want to use FTP to transfer files to the place where your website is hosted. This is port triggering.
Port triggering, if set up to prevent transfers out, protects you from getting the contents of your hard drive ripped off. Password protect your router.

Oh, I see. Thanks, I thought it was a more secure version of port forwarding.
