Doorbell/intercom for gate way out there

As we settle into our new home I am coming to realize we have no way for guests to “ring the doorbell” so we can come out and open the gate to let them onto the property. In the spirit of staying out of the cloud, I am looking for a solution, or even building a solution.

Must have

  • a button to ring a buzzer in the house.
  • a buzzer in the house

Preferences

  • wireless
  • intercom at both ends
  • HA integration (flash a light? popup a message? sms to the phone?)

Nice to have

  • Video
  • HA connection to the gate controller to remote open it from the house (our remotes only have a range of about 50 feet)

I am 90% sure I can get a strong wifi signal that far as I will be bridging my network to the greenhouse which is 1/2 way to the gate. I’m in Florida so I only need to worry about wind, rain and heat/humidity.

Anyone with any ideas? Bread boarding, pieces and parts that might work, weather proofing at the gate, etc??

You have a few different options:

  • DIY: You can put a Raspberry pi with a display, speaker, camera, and a button at your gate and program it to send notifications when the button is pressed. You will have to get a good waterproof case for it too. Recommend doing this only if you know what you are doing

  • Pre-built: You can get a HA-supported video doorbell and you get all the requirements already built-in. I use the Dahua VTO-2202 and it has been working quite well so far. You will have to block it’s internet access and point it to an internal SIP server for the calling functionality to work. See a review here: The one 🔔doorbell🔔 to do it all! - YouTube

Hope this helps, and all the best!
