Ecobee Thermostat Integration - GHOST Actions?

I am a new HA user, having just set up a home server a few months ago. I have several lights and switches successfully working with automations, and I’m looking forward to doing so much more.

I installed an Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium (ECB501) and used the HomeKit integration to add it to HA. I’m using the standard thermostat card to view and control the device. I have not installed any automations, triggers or anything else associated with the Ecobee. Here’s where I’ve gotten confused.

Each day at midnight, 8:00am, and 9:00pm – regardless of any other thermostat settings – the Ecobee changes to Cooling mode with a setpoint of 68 degrees. Again, I have no other climate integrations, automations, or triggers in use related to the thermostat or Ecobee. Parsing the device logs, I can see the following:

You can see other settings and activities to change the thermostat. It’s those mystery “action Climate: Set HVAC Mode” entries that are puzzling. Those don’t exist in any yaml files that I can find. Installing the HomeKit plus Ecobee thermostat added the Climate integration. All are using the default settings.

I have set profiles and Comfort Settings using the Ecobee app. All of them get reset according to the HA logs. Additionally, I’ve disabled the “learning” mode of the thermostat so that I can be sure what is getting set from where.

Can anyone explain what’s going on and how to set up proper automations for temperature control?
