I’m not interested in battery-powered smart locks for my home, I want an electric door strike that is wired, preferably a quiet (DC powered?) model. I figure I can trigger it using a simple relay, controlled by home assistant.
The only part I’m unsure of is how to securely and reliably control access for people entering from outside the house. Are there any RFID readers (even commercial ones) which can integrate with home assistant?
I eventually came across a few reddit posts of seasoned security consultants who pointed out how misguided of an idea it is to do for residential unless you’re willing to spend a lot of money on a proper door+frame. Misguided not from a security standpoint but from a reliability/useability standpoint.
I ended up getting the Ultraloq Z-wave smartlock and I can’t speak to battery life yet but otherwise I’m happy with it.
Ok thanks. I’ll have a browse of reddit and see what I can dig up.
Do you have any automations built off the back of the Ultraloq? For me a convenience of a smart lock would be not having to carry around a set of keys, but have you gone any further with automations? Apart from keyless entry I haven’t quite worked out what else I might do with the lock.
Not yet, but I expect there’s a bunch you could do. Eg auto disable alarm if the finger print was used, or for unlock failures grab a still from the doorbell cam.
The auto lock feature is nice but didn’t require setting up anything in HA
