Elfin EW11 WiFi State Disconnnected

I’m hoping to get clues on how to get my EW11 connected to my LAN again. This seems to be a basic wifi issue, but I’m not sure.

I’ve been successfully using it for some time with the nodeJS-poolcontroller integration, but had to do some work on the pump and it now no longer connects.

The server shows up on my LAN and I’m able to get the configuration page. I’ve even upgraded firmware to the latest v1.44.1.

You can see on the status page, the WiFi State is ‘Disconnected’. The device also does not show up in the list of connected devices on my LAN. The led lights on the device are lit up (blinking) and you can see that there has been data received, but none sent (see below).

So, WiFi seems to be working (since I can connect to it as a server) and it appears to be receiving data from my RS485 device (pool controller), but its not connected to my network router (i.e assigned an IP) and, of course, not sending data.

Wifi mode sta

As said above, change Wi-Fi mode to “STA”. Then enter your Wi-Fi network credentials and save. Also you might want to change your WAN DNS from a Chinese one to your internal LAN DNS server (or the IP of your internet gateway).

Changed as suggested (both STA mode and WAN DNS).

Still disconnected.

It appears that STA (station) is the incorrect setting for this device. Since EW11 is used to connect a wired network (RS485 serial port) to a wireless network (my LAN), the correct setting should be AP (access point).

Nevertheless, mine is still not connecting to wifi. I ordered a new EW11 in case it’s wifi function has somehow failed. But hoping there is a way to confirm this.

STA mode means the EW11 is in station or “bridge” mode. It means the EW11 connects to a wireless network as an end device and receives a network address similar to all other connected end devices on the network and provides the services such as a gateway to translate Ethernet packets to serial commands and vice versa. AP mode means the EW11 will broadcast its own wireless network allowing another end device such as a phone or tablet or computer (but not a network) to connect to its own network and access the services provided at a predetermined network address.

Mine is running in STA mode with my network credentials entered and it is connected and working. It is also running the latest firmware, but was running an older firmware for a while before. I do vaguely remember having issues of it connecting to the network and reverting to AP mode. I solved it by doing one or a number of the following (sorry I don’t remember because it was over 1 year ago).

  • set STA mode on the EW11 with correct network credentials, submit the settings, restart from the user interface, cycle power to the device
  • move device/WAP closer and try step one again
  • clear the settings and factory reset the EW11 and try step 1 again

Thanks for the explanation and makes sense that the network I need the device to connect with is identified with SSID/Key in settings.

Also thanks for the tip to try power, reset, etc. It’s hard to remember the sequence of steps, but after I checked all settings again and hit the ‘reset’ button a couple of times on the device, it worked!

Also, it’s not showing up as an access point on my network anymore. When I was able to find it as an access point tells me that STA was not yet active because I didn’t ‘reset’ the device after changing settings.

To recap, starting a new or updated device should make the device show up as an access point on the network. Once connected and navigating to 10.10.100.254, the settings can be changed to STA. Then ‘reset’ the device should make the STA setting effective and found on a network scan of IP addresses.

Probably goes much quicker (than a few days of fumbling) when you know what its doing . Thanks!
