ESP based wireless battery powered led lights for christmas tree

Hello,

It’s probably late, but let it live for next years. I have been thinking about esp based wireless battery powered led lights for christmas tree but never found anything to buy. I know I can make it myself, but have anybody knows a similar product before I decide to make it for next years? Thx.

Beefy power bank, Esp32 board and addressable WS2812B led string.

Your one requirement of being battery powered is the stumbling block here. My experience with esp on battery is that the battery depletes rapidly. Even with low power draw you will need more juice than you think.

Powerbanks usually turn off when there is a low power draw. I found some Chinese powerbank, which could be forced not to turn off in order to have a night light in the toilet room, which usually never have a 220v plug. Never turned to do it finally.

However, how much ESP32 draws to not be powered by a powerbank? I can have two and change them daily during Christmas time.

Instead of going the ESP route, I bought a few Sonoff USB mini switches and some voltage regulators to replace the battery packs of led lights. The USB powerbacks do deplete quite fast as explained (about a day or two depending on usage) and indeed not all powerbanks keep power when the lights are off, but I have enough that do:

It completely depend on power bank. I have two and they both work without issues.
Anyway, when you power also the LEDs you will not have problem of low current draw…

Can you elaborate in detail on your solution, please?

That’s true, it depends on power bank. I find myself having three powerbanks at home that all turns off. The point with lower power draw is in standby mode. When you need to keep it checking zigbee network in any common usb led strip on zigbee, it is not enough.

I have never tried “usb-led-strip”, but normal ws2812B LEDs draw so much that the problem might become opposite, too high draw for power bank. Obviously you can adjust it in code.

If your lights are USB, you just plug the sonoff in a powerbank and the lights into the sonoff. If your lights are 5V you can attach an usb plug to the lights and do the same. If your lights are less volt, you need to adjust the 5v usb voltage down, so I bought something like this to lower the voltage:
