@tom_l probably simple solution. I preferred output of sensor as depth m ( so I could always recalibrate with tape measure) and then template would be Pi r2 x h. My cylinder is on its side with turret at top!

you probably need to recalibrate your sensor. What are the full and empty readings (raw uncalibrated)?
