I’m in a position where I’m about to rewire my entire house. I want to use this opportunity to install reed switches on windows and doors and wire them back to an ESP32 (or several) in a central location
I’m wondering what would be a good cable to use for this? Maximum run would be less than 20m
I’ve read about reduced signal strength over long distances. How can I best mitigate this? I’d definitely consider myself a beginner - using online guides/youtube vids to set things up.
I would place utp cables. They are kinda “universal”… if you need more current then you can double wires, if you need more cables you have 8 of them, you can place POE device… i mean: with 2-wire you’re stuck with 2 wires. But when using utp and you change your mind after a few years and wish to mount a different module there you have spare wires to do that…
Just for reed relay length souldn’t be a problem. In any way you will define current flow through relay (with pull-up/down resistor).
So if I needed to I could use two of the cables for the “input” and two cables for the “output” of the switch?
That’s a good suggestion. So essentially ethernet? Something like this:
Exactly. If you need more power you interconnect two (or even four) wires together at both ends and you’ll have less voltage drop over the distance. And, as said, if you ever decide to change that reed relay with anything smarter you DO have cables. Nonetheless…you may one day install electric shades…
And utp cable is cheap…
