Hi everyone, I did a quick search to see if this has been covered before but can’t see anything so thought I’d post.
I want to build some ESP8266 based WiFi>IR devices to control a projector and surround amp. I know is a common project, but I’m interested to know if anyone has done this using the ‘IR eye’ style LEDs that you see often with HDMI extenders etc. Image below.
Seems reasonable to me to assume that this would work but thought I’d ask those more knowledgeable before ordering…
I want this style because of the location of the hardware that I want to control, these seem like a neat solution. Open to ideas!
I’ve never seen a TS (2 conductor) version like in that photo, but I have a TRS style one (3 conductor) version that I got with a HDMI switcher, and the receiver head looks the same as your photo.
It uses a “HBS838” IR receiver which I bet is just a knockoff version of a VS838.
Googling around for “VS838 ESP8266” shows a few results, including openmqttgateway which seems to support it.
ESPHome also probably supports it using the Remote Receiver component.
(3 Photos in this album of the disassembly of one.)
The 2 pin ones are the transmitter and can be used if you are storing the code to be used in the esp, they are just an ir led in a case, so yes they are fine for what you are wanting, I have 4 sets like that controlling my sky boxes and the output from my slingbox
